Christians in Science Event: Our Fragile Planet – Beliefs, values and commitments – Why science alone is not enough to solve climate change
Speaker: Revd Dr Chris Sunderland

Christians in Science Bristol is the local group of a national professional network of scientists, teachers, students and all those interested in the interface between science and Christian faith. This talk is the final one in a series on “Our Fragile Planet” where we have looked in depth at the evidence for climate change and pollution.

Chris Sunderland was trained as a research biochemist, working in an Oxford laboratory at the cutting edge of biotechnology. During the 90s he was vicar in Barton Hill, a tower block estate near Bristol city centre. Since then he has worked as a social entrepreneur playing a founding role in initiatives such as Bristol Pound and Sims Hill Shared Harvest. Underneath all this, Chris remains convinced that we are living through an age of deep change, when all of our cultural systems, including our politics and our economics are in decline and something new is emerging. At this moment the one thing that human beings must pay attention to is our relationship with the earth. He is the author of three books, the most recent of which is ‘Rise up with wings like eagles – discover inner strength to transform our relationship with the earth’.

In this talk, Chris will show that climate change is a symptom of a wider disease that concerns the way that we perceive the earth and is reflected in the human-centredness of our institutions. We may pride ourselves on our scientific achievements and our reason, but, in practice, we are not as rational as we pretend. Beliefs, values and other commitments organise the narratives through which we perceive the world. Our response to climate change is being determined not by simple ideas but by a power struggle in which the life of the planet is at stake.
